This study contains two interweaving parts: a taxonomic revision of Oriental Scutelleridae conducted parallelly of a morphological and phylogenetic study of the group. Revising this well/known and badly neglected group is highly needed. The identities of all Oriental species will be clarified if possible based on reexamination of the type materials; uniform redescription and illustrations of diagnostic characters will be provided for each taxa, supplemented with user-friendly keys allowing identification of the Oriental fauna for both specialists and non-specialists. All literature information on the distribution , bionomics, agricultural importance, control, and conservation status of all species will be collected and reviewed, thus facilitating utilization the results by applied entomologists. The revision will be conducted parallelly with a holomorphological study of the family in global perspective, aiming to examine several morphological characters with particular emphasis on genitalia and to explore the distribution and diversity of the character states within the family. Based on the morphological observations the monophyly of Scutelleridae and its 8 currently recognized subfamilies will be tested with cladistic methods, and the classification of the family will be revised. Because of the great diversity of the genitalia within Scutelleridae, it will be used as a model group for tracing evolutionary lineages of genital morphology in Pentatomoidea.
