Tsinghua’s Graduate’s E-commerce Start-up Is Nothing But “AllSome”
Tsinghua’s Advanced Computing Program graduate brings China’s online shopping services to Southeast Asian female entrepreneurs.
A step-forward towards online globalization and female empowerment was taken by Tsinghua graduate Ng Ying Yi, founder of AllSome, a cross-border delivery service that allows Malaysian and Singaporean online business owners to acquire products from China in a timely manner, blurring the border limitations in South Asia for the booming online retailing market.
Chinese online retailers along with the complementary company AllSome, have made it possible for Malaysian and Singaporean female entrepreneurs to have access to a bigger array of purchasing choices in the Chinese market, creating a more reliable comprehensive interface for cross-border online shopping and delivery. It also foments entrepreneurial opportunities taking advantage of the Malaysian Digital Trade Zone. “This is actually a great opportunity we can still explore. If you are trying to start an e-commerce business in China, itself is too late because it's already kinda mature”, said Ng Ying Yi.
The idea of AllSome was brewed in 2012, the company started as a part-time activity while Ng Ying Yi was a student at Tsinghua University. She met with Liu Yishu her landlord who worked in Amazon.com and JD.com became the co-founder of Allsome. After graduation Ng Ying Yi along with her business partner decided to take advantage of the opportunities that were at their doorstep and dedicated themselves to the company at full-time.
The company takes into consideration the needs of their customers by offering a tracking system allowing them to know the exact place and time of their packages. By being the middle man between the different online retailers and the entrepreneurs, AllSome tries to consolidate all the top-selling products in China not only the ones from Aliexpress. When asked about how detrimental they are to Aliexpress operations, she said, “Our strong point is actually the market assessment in Southeast Asia.”
Ying Yi talked about her education in Tsinghua University, she recounted how her Computer Science made it accessible for her to be in the market, the program allowed her to be exposed to the latest technology while having intercultural exchanges with Chinese students. Not only as an entrepreneur but as Computer Science Tsinghua graduate, she finds herself coding every day in order to increase the proposed services AllSome give to its customers.
Nowadays online technology has become a staple in the daily life of Chinese citizens. This year’s Singles’ Day Alibaba made $25 billion in only one day. Not only there are a lot of domestic users participating, the Singles’ Day has become an international shopping tradition. AllSome is expected to enter the Thai market and the limits of where it could go are yet to be seen.
