Events in the recently cyber‐world can be modeled as a spatiotemporal continuity populated by computing devices, communication channels, and multimodal interactions. Contemporary ubiquitous devices unleash the boundary of one‐to‐one human‐computer interaction. E.g., it has become a de facto style of facilitating social events that participants use several distributed devices through multimodal interaction. How people access multimodal media in different context is an interesting yet challenging problem. It is necessary to bring together technologies for location/context adaptation, inter‐device interaction/reaction, social media analysis, and media/data communication.

In this special issue, we call for original papers that describe state‐of‐the‐art technologies and new research findings. Topics included in this special issue are listed below. Submission in additional topics related to WWW and ubiquitous multimedia computing are also encouraged.
- Web and Social Media Technologies
- Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality on Web
- New Interaction Mechanisms for VR/AR/MR
- Big media data on Web and analysis
- Big Data for Education and Learning
- Semantic Web and Social Media Retrieval
- Ubiquitous Human‐Device Interfaces
- Ubiquitous Service Applications, including Education, Gaming, Healthcare and Smart Home
- Analysis of Social Media and Behaviors
- Practical Issues and Applications in Internet of Things
- Visualization of IoT Data using Web Technologies

全文截稿: 2017-12-31
影响因子: 0.0
网址: https://www.computer.org/web/tsusc
Over the last decade, worldwide server energy consumptions have been increasing exponentially. With this continuing energy consumption in Big Data and cloud computing era, it is necessary to store and process data more energy efficiently by utilizing enormous computing power that is available in the form of new architectures and systems, ranging from low power ARM64 servers to light weighted containerization systems. By taking advantage of these new architectures and systems, system designers can incorporate novel energy-efficient policies for existing installations and applications. However, these new architectures and systems are posing many challenges in exploiting their potentials in energy reductions, such as hardware and software co-design and coordination, application specific automated energy efficiency characterization and profiling, novel programming models, etc. These challenges are becoming the bottlenecks for implementation, deployment and commercial adoptions of new architectures and systems. These new architectures and systems also come up with algorithmic and engineering issues such as performance aspects not yet eminent but expected to grow with their scaling of large installation systems, and the dynamics of its energy management. These new challenges may comprise, sometimes even deteriorate the performance, efficiency, and scalability of the dedicated applications.

This special issue focuses on the energy efficiency challenges imposed by new architectures and systems, and on the state-of-the-art designs and solutions proposed to overcome these challenges. In this special issue we solicit the contributions from the sustainable and green computing community and the system architecture community on the modeling, evaluation, and implementation, of new architectures and systems.

The National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) is a US government initiative, launched in 2015, to accelerate scientific discovery and economic competitiveness by maximizing the benefits of high- performance computing (HPC) research, development, and deployment. The NSCI aims to address five strategic objectives: (1) accelerate delivery of a capable exascale computing system, (2) increase coherence between technology for modeling/simulation and data analytics, (3) establish a viable path forward in the post-Moore’s Law era, (4) increase the capacity and capability of an enduring national HPC ecosystem, and (5) develop US government, industry, and academic collaborations to share the benefits.

This special issue of Computing in Science & Engineering examines the state of NSCI three years after its launch. We solicit papers describing progress made to date in any of the five NSCI strategic objectives. Manuscripts of particular interest describe new HPC systems and application developments enabled by or resulting from the NSCI. Descriptions of applications that are both data- and compute-intensive and efforts that involve collaborations in government, industry, and academia are especially welcome.

Across the globe, rapid growth and urbanization are placing increasingly pressure on cities and governances to make the most efficient use of their resources. Some estimates predict that 70 percent of the world’s population will live in a city or suburb by 2050. One way to address this challenge is to integrate digital technology into a city’s resources, assets, and infrastructure. Community services and assets that could benefit from such innovation include local governance departments, information systems, educational institutions, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, energy suppliers, water supply networks, waste management, and law enforcement.

A smart city attempts to use urban informatics and technology to improve or maximize the efficiency of its services and resources. Digital technology enables city officials to communicate with the community and monitor the city’s infrastructure to manage local events, oversee the city’s evolution, and hopefully enable a better quality of life.

Sensor devices and monitoring systems can enable urban officials and management to collect, process, and analyze relevant data in order to tackle inefficiencies. With rapid advances in big data storage technologies and decreasing hardware costs, our ability to collect and store this data is unprecedented. Nevertheless, a large gap still remains between our ability to generate and store large collections of complex, time-dependent smart city data and our ability to derive useful information and knowledge from it.

For this special issue, we are soliciting papers that describe interactive visualization, visual analytics, and personal, public, and commercial visual computing applications that attempt to meet the data-centered challenges posed by smart cities. More specifically, we are looking for visualization and visual analytic contributions on the following topics:

- Data in digital cities
- Sensible city networks or infrastructure
- Case studies in smart cities
- Indoor, urban, and rural communications
- Smart and assisted housing
- Pervasive urban applications
- Crowdsourcing applications
- Smart transport networks, or transportation
- Citizen motion analytics or urban mobility
- Smart energy
- Smart health informatics
- Smart devices
- Smart city finance
- Urban knowledge economy
- Smart city emergency response
- Smart city planning
- Smart architecture or buildings

The Internet of Things is upon us. Falling technology costs; unparalleled development in complementary fields, such as embedded systems, mobile radios, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence; and massive investments from the industry and governments have all contributed to unleashing this new digital age. IoT describes the concept of an Internet that is no longer constrained to connecting digital artifacts; instead it embraces real-world objects and devices. This new Internet—where networks, data, and devices work seamlessly and intelligently together—has created an ecosystem that impacts every facet of our lives.

Over more than a decade, academic research efforts have developed embedded hardware, sensing algorithms, software frameworks, applications, and interaction paradigms for IoT. Joining a large number of academic institutions and their testbeds and pilot deployments, industrial stakeholders and business professionals have recently started creating their own interpretations of the term: the “Industrial Internet,” “Internet of Everything,” “Internet of Things and Services,” “Web of Things,” and others each emphasize a specific aspect of IoT. Together, they instigated the industrial IoT revolution.

This special issue focuses on real-world IoT deployments and on the approaches and challenges of implementing, deploying, and managing them, as well as their social acceptance. In particular, we solicit contributions that focus on the following aspects of real-world IoT deployments:

- Challenges of real-world IoT deployments in the Industry 4.0, industrial Internet, advanced manufacturing, building management, smart grid, and transportation domains.

- IoT applications and services: embedded intelligence applications that challenge the state of the art in fields such as agriculture, automotive, civil and industrial infrastructure monitoring and control, healthcare, and retail.

- IoT platforms and ecosystems: how different stakeholders collaborate and generate business value from interoperable applications and diverse streams of data.

- IoT architecture and interoperability: semantic integration of IoT systems and services and information architecture design, supporting mobility of functions and executions between edge devices and cloud infrastructure.

- IoT analytics : how machine learning and data analytics techniques shape real-world IoT systems.

- IoT case studies and experience reports of real-world deployments: evaluation of context reasoning, human-IoT user experiences, and business value, and insights into social acceptance of IoT systems.

- IoT platforms and development: user-level IoT programming concepts and tools and the integration of legacy systems, and testing and verification of real-world IoT installations.
